Rebirth of the Gent

                  The Return of the Gent

Once upon a time in far away land, there lived a race of people called Gentlemen (Jin-till-men). The Gentlemen were a fair people, and all other races were happy to be around them and even aspired to be like them. Gentlemen were considered superior to their evolutionary older siblings known as Man.

At first glance, there was not a very visible difference. Both groups were male in gender. They both shared the same anatomy. Both spoke the same language based on their geographic location. It has been reported that their average height, weight and strength were nearly identical also. To an untrained eye, the specimens were indistinguishable.

Although the similarities we many, the two groups were worlds apart.  If you were to see a Man and a Gent walking side by side, usually the Gent was walking taller. The Gent spoke with an eloquent tongue and used words such as “please” and “Thank you”, “Sir” and “Madam”. The Gent usually was better clothed. He would always wear a jacket to dinner when in the presence of a lady. His clothes always fit properly and even if he had less then desirable employment, he owned a suit.
A Gentleman lived his life by principles and beliefs. If he believed strong enough in something you could not convince him otherwise.

“Don’t bother ironing that shirt, it will be wrinkled by the end of the day anyway” Man would say to Gent
And a Gent would always reply “Thank you Sir for your concern, but being a Gentleman Is about doing the right thing, always. Trying to look your best for any given situation is the right thing to do. ”

Unfortunately there was a great war and the Men and Gentlemen went together to fight against a great evil. In years past Gentlemen had been called to arms to defend one cause or another but this war was different. The respectful ways of the yesterwar, where men would battle in a rather civilized way, were gone. In the heat of battle in this new age war, the Gents realized that the caring and respectful ways of a Gentleman could not fight a war. The Gentlemen converted to the ways of Man because a gentleman always does the right thing, and helping Man win the war was the right thing. Almost all the Gentlemen were lost or converted during the war.

Generations later I think the world could use the Gentlemen again. However, I do not believe that they are dead. A part of Gentlemen lives in each one of us. It can be seen when we, without thinking, hold the door for a stranger. Other evidence is seen when one Man makes a sacrifice to save another.

NEW CALL TO ARMS: I know that I am not alone in feeling like the Gentleman is needed. I am sure that there are more than a few of you that want to make a difference but are not sure how. I’m going to tell you of three opportunities that will allow you to prove to yourself and the world that the Gentleman is alive and well.

If Gentlemen ever had their own holiday, New Year’s Eve was it. Gentlemen of all ages looked upon this day as a chance to celebrate previous successes and look forward to new challenges. Regardless of what you and your lady decide to do, put on your best, allow her to do the same and enjoy the night.

When Gentlemen ruled the earth, their wedding attire was their sartorial crowning achievement. Unfortunately, in today’s world, Men’s wedding garments consist of used clothes worn by dozens of other men all and usually poorly fitted. Your wedding deserves more attention than this. Buy a good suit, have it tailored and look like a star.

Finally, the best opportunity that you have is to do your best ever day. Press your shirt; tailor your jeans if necessary. Stop being afraid of the solid color collared shirt. Upgrade your shoes. Plan to purchase one pair of black, one pair of brown and a pair of tennis shoes without silly springs in them. Treat all women with respect. Open doors and pull out chairs; say please and thank you more often than you think you should, and smile.

These simple things make the difference. Make the effort to be a Gentleman and eventually you will be one.

Curse of The Nice Guy

I have not written in prose for a very long time and with that in mind, I am content with what I have put together. Advice for a Modern Man proudly presents:

Curse of the Nice Guy

I know you've seen her, the girl whose smile can melt a heart
Eyes shine like a fireplace in the dark
but every time you meet, you're the only one that feels the spark
Its the curse of the nice guy

You open doors, carry bags and compliment the look
Look forward to the touch every time her hand is shook
Offer an open ear and even protect her from a crook
Its the curse of the nice guy

You treat her better then another guy ever could
She knows it but rejects you just because she knows you would
It doesn't make sense and you are foolish because you think it should
Its the curse of the nice guy

Can't explain why being nice is a mark of shame
No one to blame, for all time it has played out the same
Odds improve the more times that you play the game
Its the curse of the nice guy

With three sisters and raised right I guess that's why I'm cursed
I wouldn't change it, educated me on woman's worth
If that's a curse, I'm fine with it, I think I'll hold my turf
Proud the be blessed with the curse of the nice guy

as always, if you like it, share it
